54% Of Gen Z Think Traditional Career Paths Are Going To End!

We all know what the traditional work path is; many of us heard it constantly growing up. You get a 9-5 job, work your way through the ranks, and then retire after staying there for 40+ years. Well, the youngest working generation has no interest in that and frankly doesn’t think it’s feasible.

Freelance job platform Fiverr spoke to 12,000 Gen Z workers for their Next Gen of Work report. The study found:

  • 54% think traditional employment will become obsolete in the coming years
  • 67% have considered having an array of revenue sources as essential for reaching financial security
  • Only 18% said that climbing the ranks with a single employer as a smart way of getting ahead in the world
  • Only 14% said that working for a well-known corporation was one of their career ambitions

“Faced with economic uncertainty, Gen Z is experiencing what we’re calling ‘single-paycheck panic’—they’re diversifying income streams because relying on one job feels too risky,” Fiverr’s associate director of community and social impact, Michelle Baltrusitis, explains. “Instead of waiting for stability, they’re betting on themselves by embracing freelancing and building financial resilience as the smarter path forward.”
