New Jersey-born Halsey, aka Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, grew up with hopes of earning a fine arts degree before lack of funds led her to enroll in a songwriting program at a local community college. The detour quickly became her focus as she discovered her knack for crafting deeply personal songs . After several years of gigging around the country and sharing demos with labels, she signed with Astralwerks in 2014 and released her debut EP Room 93. The record was a hit with critics, leading to a tour with The Kooks, an appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly, and a buzzed-about performance at SXSW in Austin.Â
