Hey Latin lovers! It's K Marie, a white girl in a Hispanic world, here to bring up a very serious conversation. While it is so fun to talk about Latin artists and their music, I think it is important to also help spread the word on what's important to them. Cuba has been living under a dictatorship since 1965 under Fidel Castro. Although Fidel Castro died in 2016, that doesn't mean the country is now free of this treatment, the control just shifted to his brother Raul Castro. Many Latin artists in the industry are from Cuba including Gente De Zona, El Micha, Orishas, Osmani Garcia. Even the legendary Celia Cruz was from Cuba. Some of these artists even having to leave some family members behind to be able to come to the United States to create a better life for themselves. It's very hard to comprehend what Cuba has had to deal with over the past 60 + years, but the pandemic even made it worse. The past couple days, Cubans all over America have hit the streets to speak out and support their country which is now on the brink of their own civil war. I found this information very helpful to better understand what they are dealing with.
Many artists have been showing their support for their country like Alexander from the group Gente De Zona. He basically in this video says how the Cuban people are not scared anymore, they are tired, and that this has to end.
Even Latin artists like J Balvin, Natti Natasha, Jay Wheeler, who are from other Latin countries have been showing their support on social media. Don Omar being one of them. He posted the following and said, "Son MÁS y ya NO TIENEN MIEDO #cubalibre CUBA VOY A TI y PAGO DOBLE!" This basically means, "There are MORE and they are NOT SCARED #FreeCuba Cuba a bet on you and I will pay double."
Enrique Santos, who is Cuban American just got off a plane yesterday and went directly to the streets of Miami to support his fellow Cubans spread the word on what is going on. He spoke with the Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, other key leaders, but also the public.
What is happening in Cuba is unimaginable. Yotuel, Gente De Zona, Descember Bueno, Maykel Osorbo, and El Funky recently released this song called "Patria y Vida" which means "Patriotism and Life" where you can feel and hear the pain of Cuba when they sing. It's a song that many are playing on repeat at the moment while they are going through this situation.
Cubans want to be FREE from this dictatorship. #FREECUBA
