5SOS’ Luke and Calum Tease What to Expect With Forthcoming Album

5 Seconds of Summer have returned with new music after taking a three year break and we couldn’t be more excited. Band members Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood phoned into On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Thursday, March 8, to celebrate the release of their hit new single “Want You Back” and dished to Ryan what to expect with their forthcoming third studio album.

“After five years of touring we needed some time for ourselves to grow as individuals and we needed time to step back and really find the passion again for this band and the purpose of what we wanted to do and what album we wanted to create so that time was almost essentially … to regain the love back for the band,” Calum shared of their comeback. “Over the past five years … we’ve learned a lot and [have grown] a lot as people and it was definitely crucial for this album.”

Their debut track “Want You Back,” which has been dubbed by Rolling Stone a "pop-flavored track [that] reflects on a lost love and captures the yearning that often follows a breakup,” was the perfect song to release first, the boys explained.

“One of the reasons we chose ‘Want You Back’ as the leading first single is because it’s almost an indication of what the album will sound like,” they shared. “It’s not the sole sonic of the album, but it’s one of the doors that we’ve opened up of the third album … so you can expect more like this.”

So who and what exactly is “Want You Back” about? Luke and Calum shared with Ryan that as a band the song resonates differently for each of them.

“At the end of the writing process, this was, like, a last push this song, we had the album kind of done,” Luke shared. “It came out of frustration and I think a lot of people can relate to losing something that was beautiful and meant something to you … it definitely comes from a real place, but the thing about song writing as a band when you’re collaborating is it means different things for different people in the room so I think different people took things from it.”
