'The Crown' May Have Already Picked Next Actress To Play Queen Elizabeth

The third season of The Crown just dropped on Netflix, but fans are already thinking ahead. Though Olivia Colman will continue to play Queen Elizabeth in the fourth season of the historical drama, the role will be recast for a third time in later seasons. Rumors have started to swirl that Netflix already has their next leading lady picked out.

According to Deadline, Imelda Staunton will fill Colman's shoes in the fifth season of The Crown. The prolific British actress has a packed resume, too. She's starred in a number of memorable titles, such as Shakespeare In Love, Downington Abbey and Paddington.

Harry Potter fans will recognize the actress from her role as Dolores Umbridge aka one of the most hated villains in the film series.

While Staunton would be a perfect fit for the iconic role, Netflix has yet to confirm the rumors. "We are currently filming season 4 of The Crown but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation,” a Netflix spokesperson told Refinery29

Should The Crown get picked up for a fifth season and cast Staunton as the long-reigning monarch, Staunton would likely play a modern day version of Queen Elizabeth. Perhaps we'll even see the show cast the roles of her grandchildren, Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as their wives Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Who would you like to see fill those roles?
