Kelly Clarkson tried to have a sense of humor about peopleâs outrage about the rendition of âBaby, Itâs Cold Outsideâ she recorded with John Legend.
The American Idol winner invited the R&B croonerâs wife, Chrissy Teigen, as a special guest for Tuesdayâs episode (November 19) of The Kelly Clarkson Show, during which the pair discussed the controversy surrounding Clarkson and Legendâs cover of Frank Loesserâs 1944 Christmas song. In an effort to modernize the tune for the #MeToo era, the Voice coaches incorporated new verses into their version, as those of Loesserâs original have been criticized for being suggestive of date rape.
"Did you not hear that John and I ruined Christmas recently?" Clarkson quipped to Teigen. "I was like,' How did I mess that up?ââ
"Sharon Osbourne, man. She hates you guys," Teigen responded with a laugh, referring to The Talk cohost slamming the musiciansâ âridiculousâ update, to which Clarkson exclaimed, âShe was just on my show!â
Clarkson then went more in-depth about what inspired her and Legend to change the lyrics. âHe had this idea, because of the #MeToo movement, they pulled 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' from any radio. Like, a lot of radio stations at Christmas,â she said.
"Well, I love that song. We like the original, but we noticed that a lot of people didn't. So we were like, 'Let's just give them another option.' And apparently, we killed Christmas."
