Chris Mazdzer Captures USA's First Medal In Men's Singles Luge

Chris Mazdzer made U.S. Olympic history on Sunday after he captured the silver medal in the luge men's singles competition, becoming the first American man to medal in the event since the sport debuted back in 1964.

The 29-year-old native of Lake Placid, N.Y. moved up from fourth position to second after setting a track record of 47.534 seconds in Pyeongchang during his third run. The record was beat in the final run, but he managed to maintain second place.

Austrian David Gleirscher took gold, while German Johannes Ludwig, took home the bronze. Austria's medal was the first in men's luge in 50 years.

Mazdzer will also compete in the team relay with a to-be-determined partner, and a doubles team on Feb. 15th. Team USA says they're hoping to round out their medal collection with at least one medal in each luge event.
