Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie chat on 'American Idol'

Stevie Wonder chatted with his friend and fellow musical legend Lionel Richie on Sunday night's American Idol in a rare TV interview.

The two discussed the art of songwriting and how an artist should put ego aside to succeed.

Stevie said, "You just have to be a character you're creating. An example was 'Rocket Love.' So, 'Rocket Love, I wrote in my sleep, when I heard it in my dream. I couldn't write the way it felt, the instruments that heard. But from that, I created the character and then from that experience, words kind of flowed thought. But nothing great comes easy."

Stevie said it takes talent and dedication to succeed:"If you know you have that gift, you have to be committed. You have to give it all. And you can never think, 'I'm the best in the world,' because that's when you begin to lose it, 'cause it's not true."
